Atlanta City Council Passes Smoking Ban in Parks

cigar smoking cityAround two weeks ago, the City of Atlanta passed a ban on smoking in the city parks. If you just had a “hand to forehead” moment, you’re not alone. Many residents in Woodstock, where our cigar shop is located, commute to Atlanta every day for work. Occasionally, couples will drive downtown to enjoy a date night or watch a Braves game. Whatever reason you may have for making your way to Atlanta, it has just become much tougher for you to take a break and enjoy a cigar while there.

Here is what the ban means to those of us who like to enjoy a cigar in the city:

  • Smoking, or walking with a lit tobacco product, will result in a fine of up to $1000, six months in jail, or community service.
  • The ban affects all city outdoor parks, rec facilities (public golf courses, too), and hiking trails.

Atlanta isn’t the first of our neighbors around the area of Woodstock to impose restrictions on smoking. Cities such as Alpharetta, Roswell, and Marietta also have smoking bans in public parks and places.

The vote by the Atlanta City Council passed 11-1. The lone councilman against the smoking ban was Howard Shook from Buckhead. He is quoted as saying, “I am concerned about turning our city code into a guide for preferred manners and lifestyle tips.”

Where are some of your favorite places to enjoy a cigar? Do you have any tips to other smokers about maintaining cigar etiquette while in public?

How to Detect and Eliminate Beetles in Cigar Humidors

What Are Tobacco Beetles?

Tobacco Beetles, also known as Cigar Beetles (Lasioderma serricone), are pests that can devastate your cigar collection. These pests are responsible for destroying millions of dollars worth of tobacco every year from premium cigar manufacturers. The tobacco beetle is different from other bugs because it goes after dried tobacco. The tobacco beetles make their economical impact after all of the farm work, the drying, and the cigar manufacturing. They are the equivalent of building a house, selling it, and then bulldozing it over. Over the years, this bug has slowly moved from being a problem across most tobacco products, to strictly premium tobacco products. Most cigarettes and cheap cigars rarely see the tobacco beetle anymore most likely due to the chemical treatment in the product.

When Tobacco Beetles Hatch

These beetles are most destructive at their laval (worm) stage of life. Next it will metamorphoses into a pupa, where it remains in a cocoon. Once the beetle becomes an adult, it won’t be chewing your cigar for food.  Instead, it will be chewing a large hole through it in order to escape from the cigar. The tobacco beetles thrive in tropical environments, so once they make their way to your humidor the life cycle could continue. Most cigars are fumigated before making their way into the States though. However, this practice does not apply to all cigars. If you ask around the cigar shop or go online, cigar smokers who have encountered a tobacco beetle problem have blamed their Cuban cigars.

Here’s a short video from Cigar Aficionado about cleaning up your cigar collection, including your humidor, from cigar beetles.

If you have any questions about tobacco beetles, feel free to contact us at Mr. G’s Cigar & Tobacco Shoppe in Woodstock, Georgia.

Oliva Serie V Maduro Especial

oliva serie vIf you have visited our cigar shop in Woodstock recently, you may have seen our inventory or come by for a special event and noticed Oliva cigars. This is a popular cigar family at our shop, and we think it’s time to feature a “can’t miss” from their line.

The Oliva Serie V Maduro Especial is a superb torpedo, great for enjoying at the end of the day, or for a special occasion.  At first sight, the wrapper is chocolate in tone. After lighting your cigar, there are hints of coffee, cedar, and spices.  Towards the middle of the cigar, a hint of chocolate makes its way to your pallet.  The draw is extremely smooth. This cigar, when taken care of in a humidor, has a solid build and burns evenly throughout the entire smoke.  The burn left an even, white ash, and required very few “touchups”.

The Oliva Serie V Maduro Especial is a fantastic medium to full bodied cigar that you won’t want to miss.  Try this cigar next time you swing by your local cigar shop.
